I recently fell ill with something that may take a long time to recover from. Health seems like common sense to many, but it is often misunderstood due to ignorance and neglect.
The following are lessons I’ve learned — things I wish I had known much earlier.
Mentality
- You only truly understand the importance of caring for your body after you get sick.
- Grieving over the good health you once had only makes you feel worse. Look forward, adapt, and walk with faith.
Personal Health
- It takes time for your body to decline before you even notice it. You may look healthy but not actually be healthy.
- It also takes a long time for your body to recover. Be patient.
Nutrition
- “You are what you eat.”
- Vitamin D is one of the most important yet overlooked nutrients. Get your levels checked with a blood test (25(OH)D level) and supplement accordingly.
- Magnesium is a critical mineral for muscles. It improves sleep quality and serves as a cofactor for Vitamin D. Among all available magnesium compounds, magnesium glycinate is the most easily absorbed.
- Vitamin D needs magnesium for proper absorption and metabolism in the body. Magnesium plays a crucial role in activating vitamin D and making it functional.
